7 Days to Die V3.3.0 Stable — Bigger Backpacks Go Live, The Vehicle Pickup Bug Fixed & The Known Issues To Read First
7 Days to Die V3.3.0 has left the experimental branch and is now stable — the Bigger Backpack system is live for everyone, and the release brings a handful of fixes on top of the experimental build, including the two biggest issues we flagged when the EXP version landed: the dedicated-server vehicle pickup bug and the weapon bug from dying mid-reload.
If you've been waiting for V3.3.0 to go stable before putting it on a live world, this is the build to look at — but read the known issues section below before you do.
The full notes come from The Fun Pimps — check out the full V3.3.0 Stable release notes from the developers.
🎒 The Bigger Backpack System — Now Live
The headline feature, and the answer to 7 Days to Die's oldest complaint: inventory space.
- A new 8x6 inventory grid — 4 rows of free-to-use slots and 2 rows of encumbered slots. That's 48 slots, 3 more than the legacy 9x5 grid.
- Backpacks come in Small, Medium and Large sizes, with 6 quality levels each — a real progression ladder rather than a single upgrade.
- Equipping a backpack into the new Backpack slot grants additional encumbrance slots, up to a total of 96 slots in an 8x12 grid.
- The Pack Mule perk and Armor Pocket Mods remove the encumbrance, converting those extra slots into fully usable space.
Craft, loot or buy — all three routes work, and the expanded grid grows with your gear rather than being a flat one-off increase.
✅ The Experimental Known Issues Are Fixed
Two bugs that made our experimental coverage's warning section are resolved in the stable build:
- Vehicles now again properly check for inventory contents before allowing pickup on dedicated servers. In the experimental build, picking up a vehicle deleted anything stored inside it — the single most dangerous bug in that release for anyone running a server. It's fixed.
- Dying while reloading no longer bugs out the weapon. The awkward workaround from the experimental notes — change toolbelt slot, start scrapping the weapon and cancel it mid-way, then move it — is no longer needed.
📋 V3.3.0 Changelog
Added
- Multiple toolbelt pages for use in the Prefab Editor — a new toolbelt XML defines slots, rows and pages through data, which makes it moddable rather than hardcoded.
- Increased inventory size based on backpack items — the mechanic behind the Bigger Backpack system.
Changed
ItemActionRanged.TryExecuteActionswitched to virtual to keep mod compatibility intact — the kind of change that lets mod overrides keep working.- Optimized prefab cells data to use native memory.
- Rancher footstep SFX updated from barefoot to having footwear.
- Improved bug reporting when players are stuck on the loading screen, reduced the number of stuck cases, and simplified respawn logic. Some conditions that previously hung respawning now have timeouts that prevent a soft lock.
Fixed
- Item background no longer flickers when moving into storage.
- Moving inventory item stacks no longer triggers both the 'pickup' and 'place' sound effects.
- Workstations now update the prompt for items to collect.
- Setting "drop on death" to Equipment no longer duplicates your equipment when you die.
- Fixed a possible rare deadlock between threads that could occur if a chunk-straddling MultiBlock was placed, removed or updated at the same time the save system tried to process culled (reset) chunks.
- Vehicles properly check for inventory contents before allowing pickup on dedicated servers (see above).
- Dying while reloading no longer bugs out the weapon (see above).
- Fixed a possible exception edge case in RegionFileManager.
⚠️ Known Issues In V3.3.0
The Fun Pimps list eight open issues with this release. A few of them have workarounds, and one is worth knowing before you start a new world:
- A possible NRE when generating chunk decorations — new games only. The most relevant one for server owners: it affects fresh worlds, so a wipe is the moment you might meet it.
- Euthanizer perk triggers but doesn't work.
- Item sell numbers might not display correctly.
- Unable to consume items from a Campfire — the workaround is to transfer them to your backpack first.
- Mac users with French selected as the client language can't join a peer-to-peer session or a server.
- Changing Language options on macOS freezes the game and throws an exception, forcing a force quit. Worth warning any Mac players on your server: don't touch the language setting until this is fixed.
- Unable to sell the tenth item from the hotbar.
- Switching to bows, crossbows or knuckle items in third person and then switching to first person makes the item float in front of you. Workaround: change the active toolbelt slot while in first person, which fixes it.
🖥️ What This Means For Your Server
- The vehicle pickup fix is the reason to move from experimental to stable. Stored contents being deleted on vehicle pickup was a data-loss bug aimed squarely at dedicated servers — the people running them. In stable, vehicles check their inventory before pickup is allowed.
- Inventory expansion is the headline your players will feel immediately. 48 slots in an 8x6 grid, backpacks with six quality tiers each, and up to 96 slots with the Backpack slot plus Pack Mule and Armor Pocket Mods. For a survival server where storage pressure drives base design, that's a significant change to how groups organise.
- Two server-relevant stability fixes landed: the MultiBlock/save-system thread deadlock — a rare bug that only shows up on busy worlds with lots of building — and a RegionFileManager exception edge case.
- Death penalties got safer. If your server uses "drop on death" set to Equipment, the duplication bug being fixed removes a genuine economy exploit.
- Mod compatibility was preserved on purpose with the
TryExecuteActionchange — good news if you run overhaul mods, though it's still worth testing your mod set against the stable build before a wipe. - Plan a wipe with the known issues in mind. The chunk-decoration NRE only affects new games, and the campfire consumption issue has a workaround. Both are the sort of thing to mention in your Discord before launch night rather than after.
- Warn your Mac players about the language setting. Changing Language options on macOS currently freezes the game and forces a quit, and French-language Mac clients can't join servers at all. If you have Mac players — especially French-speaking ones — that's a support conversation you can pre-empt.
Running a 7 Days to Die community? NolimitHost 7 Days to Die hosting gives you Random Gen world support, full mod support, fast NVMe storage for those large saves, and automated backups with one-click restore — which is what you want on a stable-release wipe.
Conclusion
V3.3.0 going stable makes the Bigger Backpack system available to everyone: an 8x6 grid with 48 slots, backpacks in Small, Medium and Large with six quality levels each, a Backpack slot that pushes capacity to 96 slots, and Pack Mule plus Armor Pocket Mods to clear the encumbrance. The stable build also fixes the dedicated-server vehicle pickup bug and the dying-while-reloading weapon bug from the experimental release, along with the MultiBlock save deadlock, drop-on-death equipment duplication and a RegionFileManager edge case. Eight known issues remain — most notably a possible NRE when generating chunk decorations in new games, plus Mac language problems and an item-floating workaround.
