Hytale Chapter 1 Revealed — First Look at Dungeons, Goblins, Runes, Minigames & More
Hytale Game Director Simon has unveiled the biggest blog post in the game's history, offering an unprecedented first look at Chapter 1 and the future of Hytale. With over 4,000 words, 20+ videos, and 40+ images, this deep dive covers everything from the first handcrafted dungeon and multi-phase boss fights to a new rune ability system, goblin gadgets, minigames, the Mod Browser, and much more.
Since acquiring the game, Hypixel Studios has been rebuilding Hytale from a four-year-old pre-release version — catching up on tools, growing the team, and strengthening the engine. Now, with the foundations solid, they're ready to show what's next. Here's everything revealed in this landmark announcement.
Chapter 1: Dungeons & Boss Fights
At the heart of Chapter 1 is Hytale's first handcrafted dungeon featuring the game's first multi-phase boss fight. This encounter is powered by the Encounter Manager — a system already available in the current pre-release that coordinates phases, wave spawns, and arena changes. Because encounters are authored as content rather than engine code, both Hypixel's designers and the community can create and expand them.
Goblin Faction & The Goblin Breach
Chapter 1 introduces the goblin faction as the first major NPC faction in Early Access. Goblins come in many shapes and sizes with distinct roles and personalities — from the Feastmaster elite (who calls reinforcements and charges at players) to a friendly shopkeep. Some goblins are hostile, some are friendly, and all are designed with deliberately "janky" tech that fits their scrappy personality.
The Goblin Breach is a new world event that triggers after the chapter's opening quest at the Forgotten Temple. A temporary portal appears somewhere in your world, leading to an unstable fragment of Orbis overtaken by goblins and a growing Void presence. This world regenerates each time you enter, and the Void presses in over time, eventually ejecting you back to your world. Inside, you'll find predators to track, Void assassins that hunt you, treasure chests with enemy waves, puzzles, and more.
Goblin Gadgets & Boats
True to goblin tinkerer nature, Chapter 1 ships with a collection of scrappy inventions including rocket boots, a mechanical hookshot, a glider, a mining drill, and a spyglass. The philosophy is simple: prioritize fun first, balance later.
And yes — boats are coming too. Recent movement system upgrades have made basic water vehicles feasible, though proper VFX, animations, and more advanced boat mechanics will follow in later updates.
Ability System & Runes
One of the most significant additions is the new rune ability system. Players will equip ability runes granting active combat abilities on two new dedicated inputs (E and R), alongside modifier runes that change how those abilities behave. A fireball rune could be split into multiple projectiles with one modifier, or apply a shock debuff with another.
The system is designed around four layers of depth:
- Modifier runes that change an ability's effects or behavior
- Elemental reactions — soak a target with water then shock it for a Water/Lightning reaction
- Combo interactions with friends — shoot a fireball into a friend's tornado to create a flaming tornado
- Environmental interactions — rain soaks enemies, ice freezes water blocks, fire explodes poison barrels
Chapter 1 launches with roughly six ability runes and a similar number of modifier runes. The full Runeforging system — where players find, craft, and expand their rune collection as part of the adventure loop — will come later.
Carryable Objects
A new carry mechanic lets players pick up and haul certain blocks and objects — chests, explosive barrels, and more. This opens the door for carry-only items too large for regular inventory, making transportation its own adventure. Future plans include using the carry mechanic for a downed combat state, letting friends pick each other up and carry them to safety.
Minigames Platform
Beyond the main adventure, Hypixel is building Hytale's first Minigames experience — a collection of 14 fast-paced party micro-games lasting 60–120 seconds each. A dedicated Minigames tab will let players jump into lobbies in seconds via peer-to-peer or dedicated hosting, with PvP games and persistent modes planned for the long term.
Critically, all minigame code and assets will be shared with the community, including libraries that provide a simplified API and a toolkit shaped by Hypixel's 13 years of experience running the world's largest Minecraft server (over 45 million unique players).
Mod Browser
A first look at the in-game Mod Browser reveals a simple interface for browsing, installing, and updating mods without ever leaving Hytale. There will be no paid mods — instead, players can directly support mod creators and receive unique cosmetics from the Hytale team in return, fostering a positive creator ecosystem.
Spectator Mode & Hardcore Mode
Spectator mode lets dead players stay in the action by freely flying around or swapping between surviving players. It's built as a standard, moddable gamemode so servers can reshape it without writing camera code from scratch.
Alongside spectating comes Hardcore mode — permanent death. When you die in a Hardcore world, you drop everything and spend the rest of that run as a spectator. Challenge variants with modified difficulty are planned for later.
New Engine Features
Several engine-level improvements are on the way:
- Real transparency — enabling stained glass and window blocks, plus transparent NPC parts
- Player physics — allows Avatars to stand on moving entities, stay anchored, and carry momentum when jumping off (shipping to pre-release today)
- Cubic chunks — a fully 3D world format enabling "infinite" world height and depth, already rolling out in pre-releases
- Volumetric clouds — experimental sky rendering for more immersive atmospheres
- Spatial music — blocks that emit music, with audio occlusion for positional sound
World Generation V2 & Living Creatures
WorldGen V2 continues development with a graph-based generation system that will unlock advanced procedural caves, dungeons, coherent villages, rivers, roads, and more. The level design team has doubled in size, and creators can already experiment with the graph system in pre-release.
Animal models, textures, and animations are being refreshed with a more iconic "Hytale" art style. Birds now sleep in nests, fly as flocks, and grab dropped seeds. Owls hunt smaller creatures. Foxes follow players, stalk prey, sleep by campfires, and play. Kweebecs are being updated with new behaviors, and all factions will receive similar reworks in future chapters.
Crafting Rework & Companions
A major crafting overhaul is in the works for Chapter 2, reducing the number of workbenches and shifting more activity into in-world actions like wood chopping and metalworking. Crafting areas will evolve and expand based on player adventures.
Companions — NPCs that can be invited to live in your home — will help with busywork. Each companion has unique traits and quirks, some better suited to certain tasks than others, making your homestead feel alive and lived-in.
Machinima & Asset Editor
Hytale's Machinima tool is being rebuilt for in-game animation creation, including the ability to record gameplay replays that can be edited like any other scene. Scenes can be composed together and played back to specific players, with full multiplayer collaborative editing support.
The Hytale Asset Editor is being reworked with a dockable asset browser and improved inheritance support, moving onto the same NoesisGUI framework as the game's new interface.

Simon provided estimated timelines for each major feature:
