Team Fortress 2 October 16 Update — cp_holyhell Spell Rework, A Full Zombie Infection Balance Pass & dx8 Model Fixes
Valve shipped another Team Fortress 2 update on October 16, 2026, and it's a map update first and foremost: cp_holyhell gets a mechanics rework around spells and the middle point, while six Zombie Infection maps receive a broad balance pass on the Zombie classes themselves — not just art and bug fixes.
Two small general fixes sit underneath it all: some maps now track play time correctly, and the alpha channel on the updated Cozy Camper backpack image is fixed.
The notes come from the TF2 Team — the official update post is on teamfortress.com.
🗺️ cp_holyhell — Spells Now Follow The Middle Point
- Fixed BLU side skybox not rendering for users with HDR enabled.
- Improved RED side art pass.
- Improved middle point art pass.
- Spells get enabled and respawn permanently on the side of the team that loses middle — and this can go both ways as the point changes hands.
- Lowered the round timer to 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes of any team capturing middle, instead of a stalemate, every spell gets turned into a rare variant and respawns extremely quickly. Once a point is captured in that stalemate state, the spells return to normal.
- Lowered respawn wave times.
- Gargoyles now only spawn near middle.
- Better optimization.
This is a real rework rather than a tidy-up. Spells are now tied to losing the middle point — the team that gets pushed off mid permanently gains access to spells on their side, and the buff flips if mid changes hands. That's a comeback mechanic bolted onto a control-point map, and it changes what "giving up mid" means: it's no longer just a positional loss.
The timer changes reinforce the same idea. A 5-minute round timer combined with a stalemate state that escalates into rapid rare-spell respawns after five minutes of one team holding middle means a locked-down mid can't simply grind the round to a draw. And since gargoyles now only spawn near middle, the spell economy is concentrated exactly where the fight is — not scattered across the map.
Worth knowing before you add it to a rotation: the map now has its own pacing rules, and a 5-minute timer is a significant difference from a standard control point round.
🧟 Zombie Infection — The Map Set
Six maps were updated together: zi_atoll, zi_blazehattan, zi_devastation_final1, zi_murky, zi_sanitarium and zi_woods.
- Fixed player models being invisible in
dx8. A rendering path some players still use for performance — being invisible on it is a severe disadvantage, not a cosmetic bug. - Fixed the tiling HUD icon for the Heal ability.
- Fixed the bad number display in the "Auto-spawn" text in the spawn picker.
- Zombie melee impact sounds changed into fists, replacing the "sloppy wet Unarmed Combat" sound. Small, but these maps are audio-heavy and the old sound sat oddly against a zombie punch.
🔧 Zombie Engineer's Beacon — No More Instant Break
- Instead of instantly breaking, beacons inside tight spaces now place themselves in the closest valid location.
- Fixed thrown toolboxes appearing off-center.
- Thrown toolboxes now break upon touching all clip brushes if they can't find a nearby valid location.
This is forgiveness where the ability previously punished precision. A beacon thrown into a cramped spot used to fail outright; now it relocates to the nearest legal position, and only breaks when there's genuinely nowhere to go. That's a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for a spawn ability, because failing to place one is often the difference between holding a push and losing it.
🔥 Zombie Pyro — A Substantial Buff
- Melee damage increased from 45 to 65.
- Sticky Spew now applies a 20% movement slow, and standing on puddles of sticky spew applies an additional 20%.
- Sticky spew puddles are now larger.
- Spewed Demoman shield movement slow changed from -60% to -70%.
- Humans covered in sticky spew are now tinted purple instead of black.
- Zombie Pyro's death explosion now deals 50 damage, applies afterburn, and turns themself and victims to ash.
Add it up: the Pyro's melee goes up by roughly 44%, spew now slows on contact and slows more while standing in it, the puddles cover more ground, and dying is a 50-damage afterburn explosion rather than a harmless pop. That's a class that went from area denial to area control. The purple tint also makes the effect readable at a glance, which matters more than it sounds — black-on-dark readability in a zombie mode is a real problem.
🎯 Zombie Sniper, Demoman And The Rest
- Zombie Sniper Spit cooldown changed from 9 seconds to 6 seconds. A 33% faster cycle on a ranged harassment tool.
- Updated Zombie Demoman charge kill icon.
- Fixed Zombie Heavy exploding into rock gibs when not holding a rock.
- Fixed the Homewrecker not being able to destroy EMP grenades. An Engineer melee counter that didn't counter — now it does.
- Fixed Zombie Spy dealing more damage than intended.
- Fixed queue events with some zombie abilities.
- Fixed zombies sometimes moving slowly after casting an ability.
🖥️ What This Means For Your Server
- Update before your next zi_ rotation. All six maps changed, and the Zombie balance is class-level — that's not something clients can paper over. A server running the old versions will diverge from what players see in the notes.
- Re-check your Zombie Infection plugin and config expectations. Zombie Pyro melee is up substantially, spew slows harder and covers more, Sniper's spit comes 33% faster, and the Beacon no longer fails in tight spaces. If you tune boss health, round timers or player counts around the old damage numbers, those assumptions just moved.
- The Beacon change affects known strategies. Spots that were previously impossible to place a beacon in now accept one in the nearest valid location — so if your map's choke points were balanced around beacons failing in tight geometry, expect different pushes. It's a buff to zombie mobility in enclosed areas.
dx8players should stop seeing invisible models. If you've had reports of invisible players on thezi_maps, this is the cause and the fix — worth posting, because it looked like a cheat to the people on the receiving end.- Treat
cp_holyhellas a changed map, not a fixed one. New spell rules tied to losing middle, a 5-minute round timer, faster respawn waves and mid-only gargoyles mean pacing your community knew no longer applies. If it's in rotation, play a round or two before committing it to an event night. - A Homewrecker that destroys EMP grenades changes Engineer play. If your server runs Zombie Infection with EMP grenades in play, an existing counter was broken and now works — small line, real tactical shift.
- Play time tracking is fixed on affected maps. If you run stats, contracts or playtime-based rewards, previously under-counted maps should now be accurate.

Conclusion
TF2's October 16, 2026 update is a map and balance release. cp_holyhell gets a BLU skybox HDR fix, RED and middle-point art passes, spells that enable and respawn permanently on the team that loses middle (in either direction), a 5-minute round timer, a stalemate state where all spells become rare variants and respawn extremely quickly until a point is captured, lower respawn wave times, gargoyles spawning only near middle and better optimization. zi_atoll, zi_blazehattan, zi_devastation_final1, zi_murky, zi_sanitarium and zi_woods fix invisible player models in dx8, the Heal ability's tiling HUD icon, the Auto-spawn number display, and Zombie melee impact sounds — while Zombie Engineer's Beacon now relocates to the closest valid spot instead of breaking, Zombie Pyro gains melee damage from 45 to 65 plus stronger, larger sticky spew and a 50-damage afterburn death explosion, Zombie Sniper's Spit cooldown drops from 9 to 6 seconds, and fixes land for Zombie Heavy's rock gibs, the Homewrecker against EMP grenades, Zombie Spy damage, ability queue events and post-cast slowdown.
