What Changed in TF2 in October 2026 — Scream Fortress XVIII, The Zombie Infection Overhaul & Every Patch Compiled
October is always Team Fortress 2's biggest month of the year, and 2026 has been no exception: Scream Fortress XVIII arrived on October 1, followed by two substantial follow-up patches on October 2 and October 5 that fixed exploits, retuned event maps and re-shaped parts of the Zombie Infection mode.
If you only read one post about TF2 this month, this is meant to be it — everything October has shipped, compiled in order, with links to the deeper write-ups where the detail matters.
📅 October At A Glance
- October 1 — Scream Fortress XVIII launches. Five new community maps, the Haunted Hoard Case, five new taunts, 21 new Unusual effects, a Soul Gargoyle for everyone, and a systemic Zombie Infection overhaul. The event runs through November 7, 2026.
- October 2 — event cleanup. Missing strings and voice lines, cosmetic fixes, a full-speed-aiming exploit fixed on cp_wildcat_event, a longer ctf_medi_evil, and two Halloween contract objective swaps.
- October 5 — the biggest follow-up. The new
sv_wallbugconvar for community servers, a long-session view jitter fix, and out-of-bounds exploit fixes across five Zombie Infection maps. - Through November 7 — the event is still live, with this year's contracts and soul collection running.
🎃 Scream Fortress XVIII — The Event
- Five new community maps: HolyHell, Scarypass, Trainsawlaser, Medi-Evil and Scaredy-Cat.
- The Haunted Hoard Case — 23 community-created cosmetics forming the Haunted Hoard Collection, with a chance at a taunt Unusualifier as a bonus item.
- Five new community taunts: Hippocratic Hypocrite, Showrunner's Spirit, Barrel Roll, One-Eyed Punt! and Sear You Later.
- 21 new Unusual effects — 11 for hats, 10 for taunts.
- Every player who launches the game gets a Soul Gargoyle, granting Merasmissions and Halloween item transmutations and tracking Merasmissions completed and souls collected.
- All Halloween Contracts were reset, with new contracts for this year's featured community maps. Completing one gives a classic Halloween item and a chance at a Haunted Hoard Case.
- Souls are collected by killing enemies, doing map objectives, or grabbing Soul Gargoyles that spawn on maps.
- Cosmetic and taunt Cases grant Halloween 2026 Unusual effects during the event instead of their normal ones — Crates excluded.
- Join Halloween matches via the Special Events category in Casual.
Our full breakdown is in the Scream Fortress XVIII post, including the map-by-map changes to pl_redwood, pd_mannsylvania and koth_demolition.
🧟 Zombie Infection — The Month's Biggest Gameplay Change
Six Zombie Infection maps (zi_atoll, zi_blazehattan, zi_devastation_final1, zi_murky, zi_sanitarium, zi_woods) received a shared overhaul plus per-map work. If you run any of these on a community server, October effectively shipped a mode patch.
Zombie-wide changes
- The new Zombie Spawn Picker — on respawn, Zombies choose their own spawn: cycle with left and right mouse inputs, jump to spawn, or wait for an automatic respawn. Zombies can change class while picking.
- Players can no longer be selected as the starting Zombie two rounds in a row, and dying during setup respawns you instantly. Players who are dead or spectating at round start count as infected.
- Respawning Zombies are no longer ÜberCharged and no longer play lightning visuals or thunder sounds. They drop a small ammo pack, receive Mini-Crits while below the starting infection quota, and can now ragdoll — with green footsteps and fog removed.
- The B.A.S.E Jumper can be deployed at any point in the round, and jumper weapons no longer have decreased max ammo.
Four zombie classes changed shape
- Zombie Engineer — new "Beacon" ability. A thrown toolbox that creates a respawn point, the default spawn in the new picker, destructible by Survivors, one per Engineer.
- Zombie Spy — inherited the old EMP Grenade. Disables buildings, highlights Survivors and buildings, no longer detonates instantly on a direct building hit, half the detonation time. Ranges and durations trimmed (reveal 1000 → 900 HU, EMP 500 → 450 HU). Max health 125, melee 69%.
- Zombie Pyro — new "Sticky Spew". Tar balls that coat Survivors and hinder movement-based weapons. Lost its death health kit, fire resistance 100% → 70%, and no longer ignites or bonus-damages burning Survivors.
- Zombie Heavy — new "Rock Hurl". Thrown concrete that knocks back, stuns on a direct hit and temporarily disables buildings. Knockback resistance 100% → 85%, building damage 120 → 90, no death health kit.
And in the October 5 patch
- Fixed out-of-bounds exploits using Zombie Engineer's Beacon across zi_blazehattan, zi_devastation_final1, zi_murky, zi_sanitarium and zi_woods — players had found ways to use the new throwable spawn point to reach areas they shouldn't.
- Adding missing
zi_strings (October 2), and fixes for Zombies being immune to headshots, Zombie Sniper's Spit puddles on buildings, and Zombie Heavy damaging through Bonk! and ÜberCharge.
🎯 Contracts & Objectives — What Changed
If you're grinding the event, the objective rules moved several times this month. The consolidated picture:
- cp_wildcat_event: "Collect a Halloween Pumpkin" was replaced with "Kill with a pumpkin bomb".
- ctf_medi_evil: "Kill with a pumpkin bomb" was replaced with "Get 5 kills in a single life" — and the map's timer went 8 → 10 minutes with overtime removed.
- Fixed the Marshlands contract not activating, and Marshlands now uses
mp_winlimit 2like last year. - Fixed the "Get a train, saw, or laser kill" objective on TrainSawLaser not counting kills.
- Scaredy-Cat bonus objective numbers updated, and quest objectives updated for Outburst (VSH).
🛠️ General Fixes & Cosmetic Polish
- Long-session view jitter fixed — a camera problem that built up and persisted over extended play.
snd_mix_asyncno longer crashes the game, andsv_parallel_sendsnapshotis fixed — two server-relevant settings repaired.- Fixed the Skeleton Crew not hiding Sniper bullets, the Bone Chiller hiding the wrong bodygroup, and style bodygroup settings not applying to disguised Spies. The Skeleton Crew also gained a second style that was originally missed.
- Bounty Hunter's Brim materials fixed; the Clowning Cowl had Pyro shoulder-strap clipping on the Untucked style and texture warping on Tucked fixed.
- Scout Crazy Legs lightwarp fixed (community fix from Chickenman456), and the Autumn Breeze Unusual effect had visibility problems corrected.
- Missing VO lines for the Taunt: One-Eyed Punt! were added.
- Fixed a bug where players could get stuck in certain oblique angles of walls and props — the fix that
sv_wallbugexists to revert.
Our October 2 and October 5 posts cover these in full.
🖥️ Server-Facing Changes — The Short List
sv_wallbug(October 5) — added to allow the previous movement behaviour on community servers, related to the fix for players getting stuck in oblique wall and prop angles. If your community runs movement-centric content, this is the convar to test.- Custom map limits increased — various engine limits raised for new custom maps, plus a new
-notjuncsdetailVBSP option for mappers. - New convars to control the ready countdown were added in the October 1 update (community fix from nemmy).
mp_winlimit 2on Marshlands — review any plugin or rotation logic tied to match length.- Five zi_ maps patched against Beacon out-of-bounds exploits — update if you host them.
- Two repaired server settings —
snd_mix_asyncandsv_parallel_sendsnapshot— worth re-enabling if you had disabled them as workarounds.
📌 October In One Paragraph
TF2's October was an event month with real mechanical substance behind it. Scream Fortress XVIII brought five community maps, a 23-item case, five taunts, 21 Unusual effects and a Soul Gargoyle for everyone — and reworked Zombie Infection with the Zombie Spawn Picker and new abilities for Engineer, Pyro and Heavy while Spy inherited the EMP Grenade. The follow-up patches then fixed a Heavy/Sniper full-speed-aiming exploit, plugged Beacon out-of-bounds routes on five maps, tuned the event's contract objectives and map timers, added sv_wallbug for community servers, repaired snd_mix_async and sv_parallel_sendsnapshot, fixed persistent view jitter in long sessions and the much-complained-about zombie headshot immunity, and raised custom map limits.
Running a Team Fortress 2 community? NolimitHost TF2 hosting runs high-tickrate servers on dedicated resources with SourceMod and MetaMod support and automated FastDL for custom maps and assets — which is exactly what event season demands.
Conclusion
October 2026 delivered Scream Fortress XVIII — five new community maps, the Haunted Hoard Case, five taunts, 21 new Unusual effects, a Soul Gargoyle for every player, reset and new contracts, running through November 7 — plus a systemic Zombie Infection overhaul with the Zombie Spawn Picker and new abilities for Engineer, Pyro and Heavy. Then two follow-up patches did the unglamorous, important work: fixing a cp_wildcat_event aiming exploit, closing Beacon out-of-bounds exploits on five zi_ maps, retuning contract objectives, map timers and mp_winlimit, adding sv_wallbug, repairing two server settings, and fixing view jitter and zombie headshot immunity.
