How to Ban Players on a Garry's Mod Server

Last updated: May 6, 2026

Keeping your Garry's Mod server clean requires the ability to ban disruptive players quickly. This guide covers banning via the server console and via in-game chat commands using ULX, the most popular free admin mod for Garry's Mod.

Prerequisites

ULX must be installed on your server. If you haven't set it up yet, install it by adding it to your Steam Workshop collection and restarting the server. You also need to be a superadmin to use ban commands — see that guide if you haven't set yourself up yet.

Banning via the Game Panel Console

The Game Panel console is a text box where you can type commands directly to your server, without needing to join the game yourself. Bans entered here take effect immediately — no restart needed.

  1. Log in to the NolimitHost Game Panel and click on your Garry's Mod server from the dashboard.
  2. In the left sidebar, click the Console tab.
  3. Type the appropriate ban command from the table below and press Enter.
Command Description Example
ulx ban <player> [minutes] [reason] Bans a player by in-game username. Use 0 for permanent. ulx ban Steve 0 griefing
ulx banid <steamid64> [minutes] [reason] Bans a player by their SteamID64. ulx banid 76561198000000001 1440 cheating
ulx unban <steamid64/username> Unbans a player by SteamID64 or the username used at the time of the ban. ulx unban Steve

Banning via In-Game Chat

While in-game on the server, you can use these commands directly in chat. The ! prefix is what tells ULX you are typing a command rather than a normal chat message:

Command Description Example
!ban <player> [minutes] [reason] Bans by in-game username. Use 0 for permanent. !ban Steve 0 griefing
!banid <steamid64> [minutes] [reason] Bans by SteamID64. !banid 76561198000000001 0
!unban <steamid64/username> Unbans a player. !unban Steve

Finding a Player's SteamID64

A SteamID64 is a unique permanent number that identifies a Steam account — it never changes, which makes it more reliable than a username. You can look up any player's SteamID64 using a site like steamid.io — just paste their Steam profile URL and it will return their SteamID64.

Notes

  • Ban duration is specified in minutes. Use 0 for a permanent ban.
  • For example, 1440 minutes = 24 hours, 10080 = 7 days.
  • Bans are stored in garrysmod/cfg/banned_user.cfg — you can edit this file manually via the File Manager if needed. If you do, stop the server first so it doesn't overwrite your changes, and restart it afterwards.
