How to Change the Server Name on a Garry's Mod Server

Last updated: May 6, 2026

Your server name (hostname) is what players see in the Garry's Mod server browser. This guide shows you how to change it by editing the server.cfg file through the NolimitHost Game Panel. server.cfg is the main configuration file for your server, where settings like the hostname, password, and game mode are stored.

Step 1: Stop the Server

Log in to the NolimitHost Game Panel, click on your Garry's Mod server from the dashboard, and press Stop. Stopping the server before editing files prevents it from overwriting your changes while it is running.

Step 2: Open the File Manager

In the left sidebar, go to Management > File Manager and navigate to:

garrysmod/cfg/

Step 3: Edit server.cfg

Open the file named server.cfg. Find the hostname line — if it does not exist, add it. Set it to your desired server name wrapped in double quotes:

hostname "My Awesome GMod Server"

Save the file when done.

Step 4: Start the Server

Return to the console and click Start. Your new server name will appear in the server browser once the server is fully online.

Tips

  • Keep names clear and descriptive — for example: "NolimitHost | DarkRP | 24/7".
  • Avoid special characters that may not display correctly in the browser.
  • The name update takes effect immediately on the next startup — no config cache to clear.
