How to Make a Star Wars RP (SWRP) Server in Garry's Mod

Last updated: May 6, 2026

A Star Wars RP server is one of the most ambitious Garry's Mod game modes — combining custom jobs, military hierarchy, dedicated maps, and Star Wars weapons and models. This guide walks you through setting up a SWRP server using DerivedRP, a DarkRP fork that makes it easy to rename and brand your own game mode. By the end, you'll have your own playable Star Wars RP server with custom jobs.

Prerequisites

Before starting, make sure:

Step 1: Download DerivedRP

DerivedRP is a modified copy of DarkRP that you can rename to create your own branded game mode. A game mode defines the rules of your server.

  1. Find the DerivedRP release on GitHub or a trusted GMod resource site.
  2. Download the derivedrp.zip file and extract it.

Step 2: Upload DerivedRP to Your Server

Stop the server first: Always stop your server before uploading or editing files, so the server doesn't overwrite your changes or run with a half-installed game mode. You can restart it once all the changes are in place.
  1. Log in to the NolimitHost Game Panel and click on your Garry's Mod server from the dashboard. Press Stop if it is running.
  2. In the left sidebar, go to Management > File Manager — this is where you can view and edit the files on your server.
  3. Navigate to garrysmod/gamemodes/ — the folder where the server looks for game modes.
  4. Upload the extracted derivedrp folder into this directory.

Step 3: Rename DerivedRP to StarWarsRP

  1. In the File Manager, rename the derivedrp folder to starwarsrp.
  2. Inside the renamed folder, find derivedrp.txt and rename it to starwarsrp.txt.
  3. Open starwarsrp.txt and update its contents:
    "starwarsrp"
    {
        "base"          "darkrp"
        "title"         "StarWarsRP"
        "version"       "1.0.0"
        "menusystem"    "1"
        "author_name"   "Your Server Name"
        "icon"          ""
        "info"          ""
        "hide"          ""
    }
  4. Save the file.

Step 4: Update the Lua Files

Stop the server first: Make sure the server is stopped while you edit these files, and start it again afterwards, so it picks up your changes instead of overwriting them.

Navigate to garrysmod/gamemodes/starwarsrp/gamemode/ and open both cl_init.lua and init.lua. In each file, update the GM.Name line:

GM.Name = "StarWarsRP"

Save both files.

Step 5: Set the Game Mode

  1. In the Game Panel, go to Startup or Server Options.
  2. Set the Game Mode to starwarsrp.
  3. Save and restart the server.

Step 6: Add Star Wars Content

Your SWRP server needs content to look and feel like Star Wars. Add the following to your Workshop collection:

  • Star Wars player models (clone troopers, Jedi, Sith, etc.)
  • Star Wars weapons (SW DC-15, lightsabers, etc.)
  • SWRP maps with the prefix rp_ (e.g. rp_venator, rp_coruscant)
  • DarkRPModification for custom job configuration

If you haven't set up a Workshop collection yet, see our Workshop Collection guide.

Step 7: Create Custom Jobs and Regiments

Install DarkRPModification (available on GitHub) and upload it to garrysmod/addons/. Then edit darkrpmodification/lua/darkrp_customthings/jobs.lua to define your regiments. Example clone trooper job:

TEAM_CT = DarkRP.createJob("Clone Trooper", {
    color = Color(0, 120, 255),
    model = { "models/player/clone_trooper.mdl" },
    description = "Serve the Galactic Republic.",
    weapons = { "weapon_sw_dc15a" },
    command = "ct",
    max = 0,
    salary = 45,
    admin = 0,
    vote = false,
    category = "Clone Troopers"
})

Add matching categories in categories.lua in the same directory, then restart the server and verify jobs appear in the F4 menu — the in-game menu DarkRP uses to show jobs and settings.

Tips for a Successful SWRP Server

  • Keep your Workshop collection lean — large collections mean longer download times for new players.
  • Set up ULX for admin management. See How to Set Yourself as Superadmin.
  • Write clear regiment rules and post them in your Discord before launch.
Remember: Stop the server before uploading files or editing configs, then start it again afterwards so your changes are applied.
